It’s a week before the start of Chinese New Year in Taiyuan, 1985. Lili receives a very special deer figurine from her Grandmother. It is said that this can protect you from the dreaded Nian beast who comes calling every Chinese new Year, bringing with it harm and misfortune.
At home alone again Lili looks discovers the figurine in her pocket and realizes she simply must see Grandma. She quickly finds out that traveling solo is not as easy or fun as she expected, and there is danger lurking around every corner...
Lost and alone in a dark forest, a magical deer comes to save her. Together they climb a cloud staircase, discovering a magical world in the sky filled with whales and cloud animals. But Lili can easily be distracted from her mission and is the Nian beast closing in?
